pregnancy Many pregnant women suffer from high blood pressure, or pre-eclampsia, particularly during their first pregnancy. The causes are not entirely understood, but certain pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease or predicted multiple births, increase the risk of its development. The use of drugs or other regimens to suppress features of pre-eclampsia has not proved to be useful. For example, salt restriction or the use of diuretics have been advocated in the belief that excessive fluid retention is an essential part of the problem. However, salt restriction increases incidences of pre-eclampsia, while diuretics have no benefits. Evidence shows that by following a low salt diet, a pregnant woman can cause problems with blood volume in the unborn child. Her body then attempts to counteract this with a further increase in her own blood pressure. You can learn more from an independent research paper on the subject. If in any doubt, consult your doctor.
