the industry

As a supplier to other essential industries such as food and pharmaceuticals, the salt industry plays a pivotal role in the UK. From flavouring and preserving our food, to keeping our winter roads safe, and the treatment of dehydrated hospital patients, salt is essential to our lives.

The members of the SA produce a total of some two and a half to three million tonnes of salt in a typical year. Of this, a significant percentage goes to de-icing roads, some is used by industry to manufacture a wide range of products and a smaller percentage is used in water softening, pharmaceuticals and food manufacture. SA members between them employ about 750 people and create jobs indirectly for many more.

Map of UK

World-wide, salt is produced commercially in over 100 countries, with an estimated global annual output of up to about 200 million tonnes. That’s the equivalent of the amount contained in two cubic miles of sea water - or in over eight million Olympic sized swimming pools!
