Stockpile Safety

Many authorities have increased their salt stockholding to ensure they are not caught out again by prolonged bad weather. However, larger stockpiles can bring new hazards.

Authorities should re-examine their working practices on handling salt stockpiles and ensure that appropriate risk assessment has been completed. This should include assessment of safety in working with larger and higher stockpiles.

Although there are some differences in working practices, two articles from our American colleagues, Salt Institute, may help to prompt thoughts in considering salt handling.
